Maternity services around the world vary wildly. Where competent medical facilities are absent, the health of the mother and baby may be at risk. The World Health Organization reports that “every day in 2017, approximately 810 women died from preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth.” But with the presence of a trained birth attendant, such as a midwife, maternal and neonatal mortality and complications can be significantly reduced.
As followers of Christ our concern is to share His good news in word and deed. We believe that the ministry of midwifery provides an excellent opportunity to show God’s love tangibly. At the same time, due to relationships of trust established with the mother and community over many months, midwifery presents a platform to live and speak the Gospel.
In partnership with Newlife International School of Midwifery (Philippines), women who sense God’s calling to missionary midwifery, but who have no experience, are trained as midwives in the field. As well, partnering with other medical ministry partners, credentialed midwives working with Katalyst World Partners intern to acquire field experience in preparation for overseas missionary service.
We want to see midwife practices launched around the world as gospel lighthouses. We see future midwife outposts to be, in time, financially self-sufficient and 100% staffed by indigenous midwives.
Until then, our goal is to mobilize missionary midwives and clinic managers from the West and “Global South” to launch new midwife practices/clinics in partnership with our Global Partners.
